The local government of San Francisco, California requires all citizens aged 12 and older to show proof of vaccination against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) before they can take part in various indoor activities. City officials said that same mandate will soon apply to children aged five to 11.
On Tuesday, Nov. 2, it was announced that children aged five to 11 can be vaccinated against the infectious disease. At a town hall on child vaccination, Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip said children in the age group will be vaccinated at least eight weeks after vaccines are available.
While there will be a period of time when the requirements won’t apply to them, soon even children aged five to 11 will need to provide proof of vaccination to join indoor activities. (Related: California county shuts down In-N-Out over refusal to enforce vaccine mandates.)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also officially recommended the Pfizer vaccine for children aged five to 11 on Wednesday, Nov. 3. On Friday, Nov. 5, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the vaccine an emergency use authorization. In most cases, governments and employers wait for full approval before issuing vaccine mandates.
Most of the state, local and corporate mandates weren’t announced until after the FDA granted full approval to Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 16 and older. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s statewide school vaccine mandate for children won’t take effect until after the FDA grants full approval for each age group.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Unified School District announced in early November that it won’t include children aged five to 11 in its school vaccine mandate. However, Los Angeles does include children aged 12 to 15 in the mandate and the Pfizer vaccine still isn’t fully approved for that age group.
San Francisco has no vaccine mandate for children in school.
Like adults, children who are five to 11 require two vaccines at least three weeks apart. The Pfizer vaccine allegedly has a 90.7 percent efficacy rate in clinical trials among this age group, but parents who are considering vaccinating their children must also think of the many side effects of vaccines.
In a study published by the FDA, scientists monitored 2,000 children from five to 11 years old to determine the side effects of the Pfizer vaccine. Results revealed that children may experience many of the same side effects as adults, which include:
Dr. Leana Wen, professor of health policy and management at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, said that there were no instances of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) recorded among the young children observed in the study.
But this doesn’t mean parents should be lining up to get their kids vaccinated.
Wen noted that once more children are inoculated against COVID-19, there’s a risk that some of them may develop myocarditis after vaccination. The inflammatory disease was linked to the Pfizer vaccine, especially in men under the age of 30.
On Thursday, Nov. 4, the Biden administration announced that employees at large companies have until January 4, 2022 to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The government’s vaccination policies will impact millions of workers in the country.
The mandate applies to private sector companies employing 100 or more workers. Federal contractors and health care workers are also expected to comply with the vaccine mandate.
If workers aren’t vaccinated by the January deadline, employers need to make sure that all unvaccinated employees present a weekly verified negative COVID-19 test. Under this mandate, employers must also ensure that all unvaccinated employees are masked and pay employees for time off to get vaccinated.
Aside from forcing workers to get vaccinated if they want to keep their jobs, the January 2022 vaccination deadline can also have significant repercussions for those seeking unemployment benefits since workers fired for refusing to get vaccinated may not be qualified to receive them.
